AI is no longer a trend. It's a tool, and wine people are already using it: to study, to write, to get organised, and to get back the time that disappears between shifts.
So the question isn't whether AI will touch wine education. It already has. The question is how you will use it.
How AI chat works for learners
A chat tool like ChatGPT reads your question and writes back a clear, structured answer in seconds. The trick is asking the right thing. Vague in, vague out. Specific in, useful out. Five prompts for your first week:
- “Explain malolactic conversion in simple terms, then give me one wine where it shows.”
- “Write ten flashcards on the 1855 Bordeaux classification: question on the front, answer on the back.”
- “Quiz me on the classic markers of Nebbiolo, one question at a time.”
- “Compare Chablis and Meursault in five lines: soil, climate, oak, style, food.”
- “Play a guest who wants a red under a budget. Ask me two follow-up questions.”
Less time digging. More time learning.
Why it matters for wine professionals
Wine exams are tough, at the Court of Master Sommeliers or at WSET. To get through them while working, you need three things. AI helps with all three, if you know how to use it.
- Speed. The content load is heavy. AI turns a chapter into questions in seconds, so your hours go into answering, not preparing.
- Structure. Ask it to follow your exam's own format: the Court's Deductive Tasting Method or WSET's Systematic Approach to Tasting. Practise the way you'll be marked.
- Support. At midnight before a double shift, it's there to explain the thing that didn't click. Without judgement, as many times as you need.
The rules that keep it honest
- Check it against the official material. AI can sound sure and be wrong. Your Court's or WSET's material is the answer key.
- It can't taste. It can drill the words of the grid. The palate is yours to train, in a glass, with other people.
- Keep guests' details out of it. Never paste personal data into a public AI tool.
- Write your own final answers. AI builds the frame. You do the thinking.
Where SOMM DIGI AI fits
That's what I built SOMM DIGI AI for: the exam path you're on, Court of Master Sommeliers or WSET, Introductory, Certified or Advanced. Honest about it: I didn't build my own AI model. I taught today's best AI to talk wine like a sommelier, using my own Advanced Sommelier exam notes. Inside:
- 3,000+ exam-prep questions, quizzes and flashcards.
- 35 Certified flashcard decks with native audio in nine languages.
- Blind tasting and wine-list drills, and pronunciation help.
- PairMe for the pairing question, and a chat for everything else.
- Free to start, with no card.
You don't need to start with mine. Just start.
This isn't about pushing my tool. It's about using what works. AI is here, and in wine it's still underused. Start simple tonight: ask any AI to quiz you, summarise a region, or compare two grapes. My free Prompt Guide works in ChatGPT and Claude too. And when you want one built only for wine, SOMM DIGI AI is here.

Questions people ask
How are wine professionals using AI?
Mostly for study (explanations, quizzes, flashcards), writing (wine list notes, staff training, emails), translation and summaries. The tasting and the guest stay human.
Is AI accurate about wine?
Often, but not always. It can invent details with confidence, so check anything important against your Court's or WSET's material, or the region's official body.
What is the first thing to try?
Ask an AI chat to quiz you on one region, one question at a time, and answer from memory before you look anything up.
Do I need to pay for AI?
No. Most AI tools have a free version that is enough to start, and SOMM DIGI AI is free to start, with no card.
