Still not certified. Still showing up.

For everyone with flashcards in their pocket and the fear of being behind: you are not less because you haven't passed. A note from someone a few steps ahead.

Hey. You, with the flashcards in your pocket.

The late nights. The line-up of bottles with scribbled notes and tired hands. The fear that you'll never catch up.

I see you. I was you. I passed the Certified Sommelier exam in 2014 and the Advanced in 2019. Five years between two pins.

There's something no one tells you when you start studying wine: it's not just the content that's hard. It's the constant feeling that you're behind.

I know what it's like to whisper “I'm still in the process” and feel the room get a little quieter. To see the certified, the badged, the “finished”, and wonder if you'll ever arrive.

You are not less because you haven't passed

Let me tell you this, not as a guru, not as a gatekeeper, just as someone a few steps ahead: the exam is one moment. You are many.

You are the bottles you've opened, the stories you've absorbed, the tables you've looked after when your own heart was breaking. You are the study sessions, the humility, the grit, the grace.

Please don't let one exam day shrink your brilliance.

The work you're doing is already the work

Yes, study. Yes, strive. But don't forget: what you're doing now is already the work of a wine professional.

  • When you pause to explain tannin to a guest who's nervous to ask: that's the real flex.
  • When you lift someone else's confidence along with your own: that's leadership.
  • When you show up for your team, bottle in hand, ego checked at the door: that's mastery.

The pin doesn't give you purpose. It affirms one you've already built. And if you never get the paper? You're still allowed in the room. In fact, you might be the one holding the door for someone else.

If you're between attempts

  • Know the exam you're sitting. At the Court of Master Sommeliers Europe, the Certified exam has three parts: a theory paper of 40 multiple-choice and short-answer questions, two wines tasted blind on a grid, and a service test. You need 60% in each, and all three are passed together.
  • Study a little every day. Ten minutes of questions beats a weekend of cramming.
  • Taste with other people. A tasting group shows you what you miss on your own.
  • Practise service out loud, at home, with a real bottle and a real wine key.

Where to start: how to become a Certified Sommelier, what each sommelier pin means, and the free Level 1 practice test. For daily questions, SOMM DIGI AI has 3,000+ exam-prep questions and 35 Certified flashcard decks, free to start.

You are not unfinished. You are unfolding.

Questions people ask

Do you need to be certified to work as a sommelier?

No. Certification is a qualification, not a licence. Many people work the floor first and certify later. It does help show employers what you know.

What are the Court of Master Sommeliers levels?

Four: Introductory, Certified, Advanced, and the Master Sommelier Diploma. You pass them in order; you can't skip a level.

What if I fail part of the Certified Sommelier exam?

At the Court of Master Sommeliers Europe, the theory, tasting and service parts must be passed together, so prepare all three again. Check your Court's current rules before you book.
